Recommended are everything from Tazawako – Japan’s deepest lake – to Mt. Akita Komagatake, which gained notoriety in the famed “Shin Hanano Hyakumeizan” essay. You can also visit Kakunodate, which is like a Tohoku’s own little Kyoto, as well as the Koiwai Farm, which is recommended for families with kids.
At once the very heart of Akita tourism, this is also a region with many places to see and visit at the center of northern Tohoku as well. With fresh verdure and mountain vegetables in the SPRING, festivals and a cool refuge from the oppressive heat in the SUMMER, leaves with autumnal colors and a wealth of mushrooms in the FALL, and skiing, snowboarding, and hot-pot dishes in the WINTER, visitors can enjoy the spectacles of nature and culinary delights during all four seasons.
From the Morioka Interchange of the Tohoku Expressway, take Route 46 in the Akita direction. Turn right to get on Route 341 and proceed in the direction of Tazawakokogen (it takes about 60 minutes from the Morioka Interchange).
Take the Akita Shinkansen and get off at JR Tazawako Station. From there take a bus bound for Nyuto Hot Spring or Tazawako Plateau Hot Spring and get off at the Mizusawa hot spring village bus stop. (It takes about 25 min.) The Akita Airportliner to Nyuto is a convenient way of getting here. (It takes about 110 min. Seats can be booked by noon the prior day at the latest.)
